چکیده
introduction.?Snake venom is a secretion from the specialized glands in the mouth of the snake, analogous to the salivary glands of other animals. The venom itself is a complicated Protein and behaves like an enzyme. It is^ a neurotropic poison which is also endowed with digestive functions. Its strong proteolytic Properties are well known. A rat after being swallowed whole by a snake is completely digested in the gastro-intestinal tract, the ejected fsecal matter being only a small ball of hair and nails. Recent investigations on venoms have enabled the identification of a number of active constituents, namely, coagulative, hemolytic and neurotoxic principles. These active principles

Neuromuscular activity of Bothrops fonsecai snake venom in vertebrate preparations
The neuromuscular activity of venom from Bothrops fonsecai, a lancehead endemic to southeastern Brazil, was investigated. Chick biventer cervicis (CBC) and mouse phrenic nerve-diaphragm (PND) preparations were used for myographic recordings and mouse diaphragm muscle was used for membrane resting potential (RP) and miniature end-plate potential (MEPP) recordings. Creatine kinase release and mus...
متن کاملThe Triterpenoid Betulin Protects against the Neuromuscular Effects of Bothrops jararacussu Snake Venom In Vivo
We confirmed the ability of the triterpenoid betulin to protect against neurotoxicity caused by Bothrops jararacussu snake venom in vitro in mouse isolated phrenic nerve-diaphragm (PND) preparations and examined its capability of in vivo protection using the rat external popliteal/sciatic nerve-tibialis anterior (EPSTA) preparation. Venom caused complete, irreversible blockade in PND (40 μg/mL)...
متن کاملPartial Purification and Characterization of Anticoagulant Factor from the Snake (Echis carinatus) Venom
Objective(s): Snake venoms contain complex mixture of proteins with biological activities. Some of these proteins affect blood coagulation and platelet function in different ways. Snake venom toxin may serve as a starting material for drug design to combat several pathophysiological problems such as cardiovascular disorders. In the present study, purification of anticoagulation facto...
متن کاملThe Effects of Bezoar on the Echis carinatus Snake Venom Poisoning in Mice
The Bezoar, a dense material found in the stomach of wild goat, is widely used against various diseases including snakebite in traditional medicine among the southeast tribes of Iran. This study was performed to evaluate the Bezoar effect on experimental mice receiving 2% and 10% concentrations of natural crude of Echis carinatus snake venom. Various doses of Bezoar (6, 50, 100 & 200 mg/kg/i....
متن کاملThe Sterility of Snake Venom Solutions
The haemostatic effect of viperine venom and the analgesic effect produced by cobra venom have made venom therapy a popular form of treatment, particularly in chronic painful conditions. In addition to these specific indications snake venoms are in considerable vogue in some centres and are administered in an increasing number of clinical conditions. The venom preparations are used differently,...
